Abide With Me – Elizabeth Strout

January 7, 2011

Abide with Me follows the life of a small town pastor, Tyler Caskey, as he deals with his life after the death of his wife. At the same time, he is fighting an uphill battle with the members of his congregation as the local ladies rumor mill stirs up gossip and trouble with his personal life, his relationship with his housekeeper, and the increasing behavioral issues with his eldest daughter. The book takes you through the events and feelings the follow Tyler as he grapples with his faith and comes to terms with the events in his life. This is a book about faith, about small town life in the 1950s, and about the relationships we have as people.

There is no doubt that Elizabeth Strout is a talented storyteller and an excellent writer. Her writing style is beautiful and lyrical. This is the second book I have read by her, and I have thoroughly enjoyed both books.  She is able to capture emotion and translate it into words on the page with beauty and ease. I will be reading more of Strout’s work and would very much recommend her books to anyone looking for a satisfying read.
