The Financial Loves of the Poets – Jess Walter

April 15, 2011

This was my bookclub’s choice for the month of April. We had read quite a few heavy books in a row and everyone wanted to read something light and funny. This book hit the nail on the head with that one.

This book is so difficult to describe. It is so current with what is going on today – the narrator’s loses his job and his house is on the brink of foreclosure. He goes out to 7-Eleven one night to buy milk for his kid’s breakfast in the morning, befriends a group of drug dealers, and somehow ends up selling drugs himself. Doesn’t sound very funny, but I guarantee you will laugh your way through this book. If I had to describe it with one word, I would describe it as hilarious.

This is a book I would never have chosen on my own in a million years. But that’s what I love about my bookclub. It forces me to read many books that are outside of my comfort zone. And I end up falling in love with so many of them.

This book was so fresh and so original. I just loved every page.
